In the exhibition New Capital, photographer Nick Hannes (°1974, Antwerp) highlights newly designed capital cities. For ecological, demographic or strategic reasons, several countries have recently decided to build a brand new capital. In this exhibition, photographer Nick Hannes examines the characteristics of six New Capitals and their social and ecological implications. The photographs testify to the unifying effect of globalisation and show us that the contemporary city is increasingly becoming a city of simulation, stripped of its local character and identity.
New Capital was awarded a World Press Photo Award in 2023. Parts from this project previously appeared in De Standaard and Newsweek Japan.
