In Aggregatietoestand van een Tovenaarsbrein, Verlinden unfolds a meticulously constructed universe of drawings, textile works, and sculptural objects.

The title refers to the way Verlinden regards ideas, forms, and materials as mutable “states.” Just as matter can shift from solid to liquid or gas, his visual language is in constant transformation. The “wizard’s brain” represents the imagination that propels these shifts: a mind that moves freely between intuition, research, and ritual.

Verlinden constructs an idiosyncratic cosmology through delicate drawings, textile works, and sculptures in which influences from folklore, space travel, and haute couture converge. By pulling everyday techniques out of their original context, he reframes them within a new, mythical narrative. Beneath the clear, colorful formal language lie reflections on identity, gesture, collective memory, and the longing for connection in a fragmented world.

Aggregatietoestand van een Tovenaarsbrein invites the viewer to pause and consider the shifting states of our own thoughts, rituals of connectedness, and the visible and invisible atmospheres that shape our sense of home, recognition, and self.

About Mauritz Verlinden

Mauritz Verlinden was trained as a painter but evolved into a versatile artist with a distinct preference for labour-intensive techniques. Embroidery, drawing, and stone carving form the core of his practice. The slow, patient working process leaves no room for impulsiveness and allows each piece to emerge organically.
