Artist in residence Saddie Choua cut her residency at Be-Part short to join the Belgian delegation of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail for Gaza on August 31.
Choua is known for her engaged work that bridges art and politics. Alongside a diverse Belgian group – including a doctor, a lawyer, a paramedic, and other activists – she participates in this international civic initiative, which aims both to deliver aid and to raise awareness about the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla brings together participants from 44 countries: activists, artists, politicians, doctors, lawyers, journalists, and human rights defenders. Among them are well-known figures such as climate activist Greta Thunberg, actor Liam Cunningham, and Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela.
The Global Sumud Flotilla is a coordinated, non-violent fleet of mostly small vessels sailing from ports across the Mediterranean to challenge Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza. The flotilla unites a diverse international coalition, including participants from previous land and sea initiatives such as the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, Freedom Flotilla Coalition, and Global Movement to Gaza.
We wish her and all fellow stravel a safe and successful mission.
