During the weekends of May 10–11 and 17–18, the new series Kartonkoppen will be presented – and offered for sale – in the studio of artist Rein Dufait.

Kartonkoppen – with karton referring to the material and koppen to the size, roughly that of an average face – is a series of 40 unique collages created over the past few months. In this series, the content is, in a way, turned inside out: instead of being in the book, it appears on the outside – on the front cover, back cover, spine, and edges. During your studio visit, you'll not only discover these new works but also have the opportunity to talk with the artist.

In Kartonkoppen, Dufait explores potential covers for a new book, creating a variety of interpretations. The works hover between paintings and collages, in which he reuses and transforms existing drawings into intriguing objects. Elements from his studio are reworked and manipulated, resulting in a layered, tactile whole. Notably, he introduces text fragments in a new way—described as loose thoughts, fleeting snippets that add an extra dimension to the work.

The pieces will also be available for purchase during the exhibition weekends to support the production of a new publication on Rein Dufait’s work. This publication is designed by Studio Luc Derycke, published by Mer. Borgerhoff & Lamberigts, and will be released on September 20 to coincide with the exhibition ginder de dingen, de dagen en de wolken at Be-Part, Waregem.

Rein Dufait (°1990, Ostend) is a versatile artist who works with a range of materials such as cardboard, sand, planks, acrylic resin, acrylic paint, and oil pastel. He intuitively combines and assembles these building blocks, driven by his own unique logic. Inspired by the structures, materials, colors, and constructions in his immediate surroundings—particularly his studio—Dufait consciously blurs the boundaries between sculpture, painting, drawing, and collage.

Unique series of 40 new works by Rein Dufait, crafted from cardboard with a collage on both sides.
