De Gaverprijs, organised by CC De Schakel, Cultuurraad, Be-Part and the Waregem Town Council, is a biennial competition for contemporary painting. This 20th edition is considered the most distinguished prize for painting in our country and provides a platform for artists to present their artistic relevance and unique visual language to a wide audience.

The jury selected 23 works that will be on display at Be-Part until 24 February. On Saturday 13 January, Ilke Cop (1988) from Anderlecht was awarded the 2024 Gaverprijs . Nineteen-year-old Jarne Elsen from Nieuwrode was awarded 2nd prize.

Winners

The winner of the Gaverprijs 2024 is Ilke Cop (1988) from Anderlecht. The jury appreciates in the work of Cop, who, after an education in art sciences, made a name for herself with her own fashion label and who, as a self-taught artist, has also profiled herself as a painter for only a few years now, both her very personal choice for daring, disruptive and critical image montages in which art-historical, allegorical and autobiographical motifs - including self-portraits - are brought together, and her expert approach to the large(er) format. In awarding the Gaverprijs to Cop, the jury consciously wishes to support her promising talent. In accordance with the competition rules, the jury is very happy to recommend Cops canvas Bountiful III (2022) for transfer to Stad Waregem.

The second prize of the Gaverprijs 2024 goes to the youngest participant, 19-year-old Jarne Elsen (2004) from Nieuwrode in Flemish Brabant. Elsen submitted a very homogeneous entry of two equally sized canvases, which stand out for the stunning combination of an intriguing yet readable narrative in an emphatic, pictorial materiality. The painted scenes strike us both by their spatiality, the colouring used and the tight patterns incorporated.
