Marijke De Roover (1990, BE) is a visual artist and performer. She graduated from KASK and in 2018 she obtained a degree from HISK in Ghent. De Roover investigates how identity takes shape in our society, exploring the role of politics, pop culture, religion and ethics, among others.
Popular romcoms, musicals and Disney films are full of clichés. Looking at operatic history, women and minority groups are often assigned symbolically weaker positions of power. In Live, Laugh, Limerence, Marijke De Roover questions the way we choreograph and culturally organise love through heteronormative structures. In this operatic performance, De Roover references the idea of romantic friendship and the work of poet Adrienne Rich. In doing so, she proposes a new kind of love model unprecedented in contemporary media.
Be-Part invited Marijke De Roover to perform this performance on the 26th of March 2022 in CC De Schakel. The performance was framed within the MAART Art Route. In addition, the performance was also shown at the Centre Pompidou Paris, at the Garage Rotterdam, De Pont in Tilburg and at an event of the David Roberts Art Foundation in London.
